"Gymnast wrist" refers to an inflammation and irritation of the epiphysis (growth plate) located at the end of the radius or forearm where the arm connects to the wrist to form the hand. With the wrist often supporting the full weight of the body, the wrist must bear the brunt of the pressure, in many routines. A predominant gymnastics wrist injury, the dorsal wrist impingement happens because of the back of the radius strikes the wrist bones, often happening when a gymnast is doing handsprings or walkovers. A direct result of extending or stretching of the joint past its usual range of motion or hyperextension, this injury is unique to the athletes that perform gymnastics. The amount of force placed on the joint or bone, often called axial loading, is another possible cause to this painful condition.
With the weight of the body placed on the wrist, when performing maneuvers like handstands, working on the vault, the pommel horse, or the balance beam, this injury becomes inflamed and aggravated. The tenderness and the wrist pain that typically accompany the injury tend to subside after the gymnastics routine is completed. If left untreated this condition may cause accelerated closure of the growth plate of the radius causing a length discrepancy between the radius and ulna leading to stiffness and chronic wrist pain.
